56-Year-Old Catherine Matthews Killed in Motorcycle Crash on Twentynine Palms Highway
Morongo Valley, CA (March 16, 2021) – On Sunday, 56-year-old Catherine Matthews of Yucca Valley died in a motorcycle crash on Twentynine Palms Highway.
The fatal crash happened at 8:18 p.m.
Officers said Matthews was driving her motorcycle around 60 mph traveling east in the number 2 lane before the crash. Authorities added she was wearing a helmet at that time.
Ahead of her was a green Mitsubishi Montero driven by 41-year-old Galo Zurita also from Yucca Valley. Apparently, Zurita was going 45 mph. Another man was in the passenger seat and a 5-year-old girl was in a child seat at the back of his vehicle.
Then, when Matthews was east of Yucca Park Road, she ran into the rear of the Mitsubishi.
As a result, Matthews was thrown from her motorcycle and landed on the highway.
She incurred major injuries and was taken by Morongo Basin Ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center.
No one in the Mitsubishi Montero incurred injuries, though, the back of the vehicle was moderately damaged.
Meanwhile, 63-year-old Denise Gilpin, also from Yucca Valley was driving a white Ford 500 eastbound on the highway. Gilpin ran into some debris from the crash. Her truck incurred minor damage to the right front, but Gilpin was unhurt.
