Caroline Pacheco Killed, Aleksandr Mirko Unharmed in Collision on Progressive Road at South Wapato Road
WAPATO, WA (January 8, 2019) – A 34-year-old woman was killed, and her 6-year-old child was injured in a two-vehicle crash with a tractor-trailer Thursday on Progressive Road at South Wapato Road.
According to the Yakima County sheriff’s deputies, 34-year-old Caroline Pacheco was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse northbound on South Wapato Road around 8:18 a.m.
Authorities say she had the right-of-way as she crossed the intersection with Progressive Road and struck the rear wheels and the corner of a 2012 Volvo semitrailer that was traveling westbound on Progressive Road.
Officials determined that 44-year-old Aleksandr Mirko failed to acknowledge the stop sign at South Wapato Road as he was operating the semitrailer.
The trailer detached from the semi-tractor and ended up in a nearby yard while the Chevy spun out before it came to a stop on Progressive Road.
Although Pacheco was strapped in a seat belt, she succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene. Her 6-year-old child was also injured and brought to a Yakima hospital before being released. Mirko escaped the crash unharmed and was not believed to be under the influence at the time of the crash.
Authorities are still investigating this crash to determine the liabilities and circumstances.
Our hearts go out to the bereaved family and friends of Caroline Pacheco. We hope you all find comfort and courage in light of these heavy times.
