Cal Fire Captain Paul Rotondaro Dead after Gustine Fiery Crash on Highway 140
GUSTINE, CA (October 4, 2019) – A Cal Fire captain identified as Paul Rotondaro died in a fiery head-on crash on Wednesday, October 2.
The CHP said the collision occurred at about 7:00 a.m. on Highway 140 near Old Santa Fe Grade.
Captain Rotondaro traveled in a Ford pick-truck moving east. Then a Dodge Ram traveling west tried to pass a car but instead crashed head-on into Rotondaro’s truck.
The Dodge flipped over several times, killing that driver, whose identity was not yet released.
The Ford went off the road and then it caught fire, killing Captain Rotondaro. Two people inside the vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The California Highway Patrol stated that the 36-year-old captain was with the Cal Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced. He started his career at CAL FIRE in 2006.
Captain Rotondaro grew up in Merced County. He was proud to help serve the county he lived in.
The captain is survived by his wife, Jennifer; 13-year-old daughter, Kiersten; and 16-month-old son, Wyatt.
Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of Captain Rotondaro.
