The crash happened around 11:09 a.m. on Highway 1 at Constellation Road off-ramp.
According to traffic investigators, a 50-year-old Lompoc man was driving a dark Toyota Corolla behind two vehicles on southbound Highway 1. He attempted to pass the vehicles by driving into the center median. Meanwhile, he clipped one of the southbound vehicles and crossed into oncoming traffic.
The Corolla collided head-on with a white Ford Explorer in the northbound lane before plummeting down an embankment. There, it caught fire as a result of the impact.
