Brandon West Detained for DUI After Striking Pedestrian at Center and Grossmont Center Drives

LA MESA, CA (January 10, 2020)—A pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck Tuesday evening by an alleged DUI driver at Center and Grossmont Center drives.

According to La Mesa Police Lt. Brian Stoney, the crash happened at approximately 6:15 p.m.

The unidentified pedestrian was attempting to cross eastbound on Grossmont Center Drive within a marked crosswalk; however, according to witnesses, the man did not have the right-of-way as he began walking against a “Do Not Walk” signal.

Meanwhile, an eastbound 2004 Nissan SUV drove through the same red light, failing to stop. Its driver—41-year-old Brandon Michael West, of Poway—turned a right onto Grossmont Center Drive and struck the pedestrian.

The nameless victim suffered serious injuries including a fractured right leg and hip. Paramedics ushered him to a hospital shortly after.

At the scene, investigators questioned West and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs causing serious bodily injury. After digging into his records, they learned that he held a previous DUI and is on probation. Police booked him into San Diego Central Jail on a $100,000 bail.

Many factors contribute to road accidents. Impairment, speed and failing to comply with road rules and traffic lights are ways for accidents to ensue. If you’re impaired by drugs and/or alcohol, resist from getting behind the wheel. Instead, rely on a drive share service. It’s also crucial that you yield to oncoming traffic when it is not your right of way; this means stopping at red lights and stop signs and slowing down when the traffic light turns yellow.
