Wrong-Way Driver Dies after Crashing Head-On with Tractor-Trailer on 40 Freeway in Barstow
BARSTOW, CA (April 20, 2019) – A woman was killed following a wrong-way crash Saturday morning on 40 Freeway in Barstow.
The fatal crash happened around 5:22 a.m. just West of the Marine Corps Logistics Base off-ramp.
Authorities said a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of 40 Freeway, when it collided head-on with a 2018 Peterbilt tractor-trailer.
The Suburban was thrown backwards about 100 feet from the impact and landed on its side, while the tractor-trailer’s front side was heavily damaged.
Barstow Fire Protection District crews were dispatched to the scene and found the female driver of the Suburban trapped inside the SUV. They worked on the extrication, but the unidentified woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and a passenger in the tractor-trailer were unharmed.
All eastbound lanes of 40 Freeway were shut down for several hours during the rescue and clearing operations. Most lanes were re-opened shortly after the crash, but the second lane remained closed until before noon.
It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs have played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Authorities urged anyone who witnessed the crash to contact CHP’s Barstow Office at 760-255-5900.
