Phoenix Police Officer and Prisoner Hospitalized after Crash on 35th Avenue

Phoenix, AZ (December 21, 2023) – Early Thursday morning, 19-year-old Ashley Vailes died in a crash on 35th Avenue.

The crash occurred near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road just before 9 a.m. Police report that the officer, driving westbound on Thunderbird Rd., attempted to turn south onto 35th Avenue, colliding with the second vehicle traveling eastbound on Thunderbird Rd. 

Subsequently, the second involved vehicle continued, crashing into a light pole and a power box, catching fire. 

Firefighters arrived at the scene, extinguishing the fire, but unfortunately, the driver did not survive. 

The driver, identified as 19-year-old Ashley Vailes, entered the intersection on a red light just before the crash occurred.

Hospital staff took the involved officer and a prisoner in the vehicle to the hospital for precautionary reasons, but they are expected to be okay.

Phoenix police state that an internal investigation is standard procedure following any police-involved crash.

Investigators are currently looking into the details leading up to the crash.
