Arnold Torres, Angel Barajas Perish in Industrial Accident at West Harlan and South Stanislaus Avenues
FRESNO, CA (January 7, 2019) – Two men were killed Saturday morning in an industrial accident at West Harlan and South Stanislaus avenues.
The incident unfolded at Vista Verde Ranch in Southwest Fresno County around 11:15 a.m. Paramedics arrived and pronounced both men dead at the scene. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office identified the fatal victims as 66-year-old Arnold Torres, of Lemoore, and 31-year-old Angel Barajas, of Cantua Creek.
Officials learned from the investigation that an almond shaker machine had stopped working for unknown reasons, so Torres – the mechanic – and Barajas – the machine operator – decided to investigate and repair it. One of the two tried crawling under the machine and disconnecting the hydraulic hoses from the shaker arm; however, according to reports, they failed to set the arm down on the ground ahead of time and because the hoses were disconnected, the arm fell and crushed both men.
Nearby workers found the victims and contacted deputies.
The California Occupational Health and Safety Administration is investigating this incident further.
