Alex Nieves Arrested, Six Hurt after Car Slammed into Pole on Harbor Boulevard
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA (April 11, 2019) – Six people suffered injuries following a DUI accident in Fountain Valley on Friday, April 5.
Officers arrested the 18-year-old driver identified as Alex Nieves, of Santa Ana, on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Officers rushed to the collision on Harbor Boulevard near Edinger Avenue at around 11:59 p.m.
According to initial reports, the SUV traveled southbound on Harbor Boulevard at a high rate of speed. As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle and then struck into a tree. After that, it came to rest against the power pole.
Fountain Valley Sgt. Jennifer Pratt said that the ages of the occupants in the SUV ranged from 18 to the mid-20s. Paramedics brought all six to the hospital because of their injuries. Their condition were not considered life-threatening, according to a news release.
It sounds like most of them were under the influence of diverse substances, Pratt stated.
Police discovered a tank of nitrous oxide in the white Chevrolet SUV. Fountain Valley Sgt. Kham Vang said that it may have been a contributing factor that caused the crash.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is legally used by dentists for anesthesia. However, it’s also known as a top party drug that is illegal use. It has been implicated in rapes, traffic accidents, and teenage deaths.
