Alan Kern Dies, Nicholas Slater in Custody after Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Accident in Kent

KENT, WA (February 28, 2019) – Nicholas Slater was arrested for a DUI after striking and Killing Alan Kern on 108th Avenue.

The 73-year-old victim was identified Monday afternoon by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office as Alan Kern. He suffered multiple blunt force injuries.

The victim got off a Metro bus near the intersection of 108th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 204th Street. He was crossing 108th west to east Saturday evening around 6:00 p.m.

Police said 37-year-old Nicholas Browning Slater, who allegedly told an investigator he’s an alcoholic, disregarded a stop sign before hitting the victim. He made no attempts to stop. A witness followed the Kent parks department truck and pulled in front of it to get it to stop.

According to reports, Slater is a City of Kent employee. Slater told police he was so drunk he doesn’t remember hitting Kern, according to court documents. Slater was driving a Kent parks department vehicle while on the job.

In addition to blowing a .344 during a breathalyzer test at the scene of the crime, Slater also blew a .321 – roughly an hour and a half after the collision. Police said Slater was shaking as he was going through alcohol withdraw.

A court document stated that Slater left a bar to lock up a city park before the incident. He was said to be a temporary employee of the parks department and was on the job for less than four months.

Slater also has a 2009 DUI conviction. The police department says it’s asked Washington State Patrol to conduct a review of the investigation.
