Abel Soto Dies After Being Struck by Motorist on Highway 74 Near Briggs Road
MENIFEE, CA (February 18, 2019) – A 25-year-old man attempting to rescue a loose canine was fatally struck by a driver on Highway 74 near Briggs Road Friday evening.
Abel Soto, of Corona, was hit around 5:20 p.m. and died just minutes later at the scene.
News reports say Soto witnessed a dog on the roadway while heading eastbound on Highway 74. The Good Samaritan pulled over during a time when it was raining that evening and exited his car to rescue the dog that was in the middle of the highway. However, during this attempted rescue, a 19-year-old Hemet man struck Soto in the roadway.
Deputies arrived at the scene and determined that the 19-year-old driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He also suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. More on this deadly crash is under investigation.
