5 Burned, Including Child, Following National City Fiery Accident
NATIONAL CITY, CA (July 2, 2019) – A fiery multi-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway near Civic Center Drive left nine people with serious injuries Monday.
According to National City Battalion Chief Mark Beveridge, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway.
It’s unclear what drove the multi-vehicle pileup that eventually ruptured into flames and burned five people, including a child.
Four more people suffered injuries with a total of nine patients, whom paramedics tended to. Of those nine, seven people sustained major injuries.
As soon as firefighters arrived, they found three vehicles swallowed up in flames. Footage from the scene showed two sedans, a pickup truck and a small SUV involved in the devastating crash.
Medics ushered the child to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego while four adults, who suffered serious burns, sought treatment at UC San Diego Medical Center.
Due to the crash, all northbound 5 Freeway lanes snarled traffic for nearly half an hour.
