Solo-Vehicle Collision on Interstate 5 Killed 71-Year-Old Man
San Onofre, CA (October 22, 2020) – On Tuesday, a 71-year-old man died in a solo vehicle collision on Interstate 5.
The tragic accident happened at about 5:50 a.m near the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant.
A 911 caller reported a Toyota SUV crashed and rolled several times in the highway lanes, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
Further, the 71-year-old victim was thrown out of Toyota during the incident.
Immediately, a medical helicopter airlifted the victim, however, the authorities pronounced him dead at the scene before the helicopter arrived.
Authorities withheld the victim’s identity pending family notification.
Moreover, the rescue team took two other occupants of Toyota to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo for treatment of moderate injuries. Though it was not clear if they were airlifted or taken by ground transport, Bettencourt added.
Authorities have not yet provided details about the other victims.
Meanwhile, officers closed all lanes around 6:35 a.m. to allow the helicopter to land on the highway, Bettencourt said. Later on, fficers ran a traffic break until all lanes were reopened by 8:10 a.m.
The authorities are investigating the possible cause of the crash.
