Injuries Reported After Train Hits Vehicle in Ventura
VENTURA, CA (December 30, 2019)—A train that struck a vehicle on California Street near Harbor Boulevard left four people hurt Friday night.
The major-injury incident happened around 6:52 p.m. According to the Ventura Police Department, multiple callers contacted authorities about the crash after seeing a southbound vehicle stop on the railroad tracks on California Street.
Police believe the 79-year-old man who had been operating the car with three passengers inside became confused as the railroad crossing lights came on and the crossing arms came down.
An oncoming Union Pacific freight train heading eastbound approached the vehicle. Its operator tried stopping the train but grew unable to stop in time. As a result, the front corner of the passenger side panel was struck by the train, causing serious injuries to a 37-year-old occupant inside the vehicle.
No one onboard the train suffered injuries, say reports. But an investigation concerning the circumstances of the crash remains. So far, authorities have ruled out impairment as a factor.
