25-Year-Old Joseph McCovey Fatally Hit on State Route 96 [Hoopa, CA]

Hoopa, CA (July 23, 2024) – 25-year-old Joseph McCovey was fatally hit by a vehicle on State Route 96 late Friday night.

It was about 11:40 p.m. on July 19 when the deadly accident happened west of Shoemaker Road in Humboldt County.

Investigators determined Joseph McCovey stepped into the westbound lane of the freeway into the path of a 2015 Kia Soul driven by 18-year-old Neo McKindley. 

McCovey was hit by the 2015 Kia Soul and the vehicle immediately left the scene.

Rescuers rendered aid to McCovey but he still died in the collision.

Minutes past midnight, McKindley and 19-year-old passenger, Dawnalee Rangel, reported the collision to the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Station. McKindley and Rangel cooperated and were released pending investigation. 

The authorities are investigating if drug and/or alcohol were factors in the collision.
