Woman Hurt in Atascadero Pedestrian Crash on El Camino Real and East Mall
ATASCADERO, CA (November 16, 2020) – Saturday night, a 22-year-old woman suffered injuries in an accident on El Camino Real and East Mall.
The police and firefighters responded to the Atascadero crash scene at about 6:07 p.m. on El Camino Real and East Mall.
When they arrived, they found out that the woman was walking east in the marked crosswalk on El Camino Real.
Meanwhile, the Nissan traveled south in the number one lane of El Camino Real when it struck the woman.
Afterward, responders treated the victim with moderate to major injuries at the crash scene. Then, they took them to the hospital in a ground ambulance.
Moreover, the police confirmed that the Nissan driver didn’t suffer any injury and remained at the scene.
Also, the authorities do not believe that drugs and alcohol played a role in the incident.
Due to the crash, the authorities shut down the southbound lanes of El Camino Real at West Mall were closed for around one hour.
Also, the Atascadero Police Department reminded motorists that, “even though many crosswalks in the city have flashing pavement lights to alert drivers of the presence of pedestrians, drivers must remain vigilant and look for people in the roadway when the lights are off.”
The Atascadero Police Department Traffic Unit handles the ongoing investigation.
Moreover, the authorities urged anyone who has questions or information about the crash to call the Atascadero Police Department at (805) 461-5051.
Facts about Pedestrians and Accidents
Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection. Therefore, it’s a driver’s responsibility to yield and be prepared to stop.
While car accidents are far more common than pedestrian accidents, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.
Furthermore, common locations for these pedestrian incidents include shopping center entrances, street corners, and intersections.
“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents. Nevertheless, the pedestrian accidents tend to include more serious injuries,” says Tyler Toomey, a practicing attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
