2 Boys Hit, Injured by Driver in Watsonville
WATSONVILLE, CA (December 13, 2019)—Two students suffered major injuries Tuesday morning after being struck by a driver on Walker Street near West Lake Avenue.
According to the Watsonville police, the boys were walking to Ceiba College Preparatory Academy in a marked crosswalk around 7:30 a.m.
A 39-year-old Watsonville woman operating a Toyota minivan failed to spot the boys and struck them while traveling south on Walker Street.
Both pedestrians suffered major injuries in the accident.
Shortly after, American Medical Response paramedics transported one of them to Watsonville Community Hospital and the other to Watsonville Municipal Airport. From there, a helicopter airlifted them to out-of-county trauma centers. Meanwhile, the driver stayed behind for questioning.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors of the crash, but an ongoing investigation continues.
Drivers and pedestrians have a responsibility on the road. Drivers should remember to slow down near marked crosswalks and to pay attention to what’s ahead in case pedestrians are near. Meanwhile, pedestrians should remember to cross the street with care and make eye contact with drivers to ensure it’s safe.
