Semi-Trucks Collide on 15 Freeway, 2 Killed in Barstow
BARSTOW, CA (January 20, 2020) — A fiery collision, involving two semi-trucks on the 15 Freeway near Hodge Road, claimed two people’s lives Sunday.
The deadly incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. First, dispatch responded to calls about an overturned semi-truck on the right shoulder of the freeway. Soon after, authorities learned that a second semi-truck rammed into the overturned semi-truck, causing a fire.
San Bernardino County firefighters arrived at the scene and found both tractor-trailers destroyed. At first, authorities struggled to identify the contents inside one of the burning trailers until much later when they learned that pallets of cigarette lighters might have contributed to the fire. The overturned semi-truck carried nothing at the time of the incident.
Paramedics brought one patient to Loma Linda University Medical Center while another patient denied treatment.
Due to the nature of the accident, California Highway Patrol officers closed all lanes for several hours as crews worked to extinguish the fire and investigate the scene for further clues as to what took place.
