Police Investigate Deadly Carmel Valley Crash after Accidental Leap Over 80-foot Bridge
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 11, 2019) – Two men died while two teenage girls suffered injuries after accidentally jumping off a bridge following a Carmel Valley crash Tuesday night.
The California Highway Patrol said the four jumped off a roughly 80-foot-high bridge after a solo-vehicle crash on Highway 56 at around 11:05 p.m. The incident occurred in the eastbound lane, just west of Carmel Valley Road.
A CHP investigation indicated that an eastbound 2012 Nissan Altima spun out and crashed into a metal guardrail on the north side of the freeway. The sedan came to rest blocking the left lane of the bridge over Gonzales Creek.
The car’s six occupants subsequently got out and began running southeast toward the right shoulder of the freeway. After that, four of them jumped over the concrete wall on the south side of the freeway, not knowing they were on a bridge. The other two continued heading east on the right shoulder.
When emergency personnel reached the scene, they found an 18-year-old man, a 15-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and another man, whose age was not immediately available, about 80 feet below the freeway.
The two men died at the scene. On the other hand, the two teenage girls suffered severe injuries. As a result, emergency responders took them to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
In the meantime, authorities were still searching for the other two occupants of the Nissan as of Wednesday night.
Further investigation of the incident is underway. Officials said alcohol may or may not be a factor in the crash. They confirmed that an open container was found in the vehicle. Caltrans will be looking into this incident but allowed the CHP to conduct and conclude their investigation.
