Police Apprehend DUI Driver in Kent Fatal Collision
Kent, WA (July 12, 2023) – At around 7 p.m. on July 11, 12-year-old Gabriel Coury lost his life following a bicycle accident on 132nd Ave SE.
The fatal collision occurred south of Sunrise Elementary School wherein a 19-year-old driver was arrested for vehicular homicide.
Gabriel’s mom, Shellie Coury, said she was outside and heard the sound of the collision. She immediately went toward the sound and located her youngest son, Gabriel, on the ground.
Coury said her son graduated from Sunrise Elementary School a few weeks back. According to her, Gabriel was creative and said he planned to make a clothing line with one of his friends. He loved sports, especially baseball and football.
Moreover, the accident report stated that the victim was riding his scooter home from the park and was only a few feet away from his home when he was struck.
Witnesses said a child was struck by a vehicle and was seriously injured. Passerbys reported to 911 incident and began CPR on the child which the Kent Police officers took, but Gabriel did not survive.
The authorities located the 19-year-old man nearby and they believe that alcohol may have played a factor in the fatal accident.
Subsequently, the 19-year-old driver told the authorities he drank four cans of alcoholic iced tea in a park with his friends before driving. Then, while driving, the teen crossed the double yellow line into the oncoming traffic lane to pass cars ahead of him.
The teen then lost control of the vehicle and struck Gabriel Coury. He also admitted to the police that he was driving about 60 mph in the 35 mph zone. Furthermore, the teen driver failed multiple field sobriety tests and blew a .150 in a preliminary breath test, which is twice the legal limit.
Later on, the authorities took the driver into custody for investigation of vehicular homicide but have not been officially charged.
On Wednesday, the 19-year-old driver refused to appear in court and the Officials with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said the teen is jailed on a $100,000 bond.
Meanwhile, the Coury family is raising money for the funeral services through a GoFundMe.
