1 Dead in Apple Valley Auto Accident on Highway 18 and Quinnault Road
APPLE VALLEY, CA (December 25, 2024) – Monday night, a person died in a brutal head-on crash on Highway 18 and Quinnault Road.
The incident occurred at about 8:04 p.m. on Highway 18 and Quinnault Road.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene of a severe collision involving a dark-colored Mitsubishi Outlander SUV and a 2016 Honda Civic. The SUV was positioned in the wrong direction, and both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Alexander Jonathan Dye, a Good Samaritan from Apple Valley, was en route to Target with a friend when he noticed smoke rising from the westbound lanes. He asked his friend to turn back to help at the crash scene.
“I had our friend pull over, and I got out to check,” Dye said. The SUV’s driver was already on the roadside, speaking with bystanders, and reportedly complained of leg pain while limping.
After verifying that the SUV driver’s injuries were not critical, Dye approached the driver’s side of the Honda, where he found an unresponsive woman trapped in the wreckage.
Smoke was coming from both vehicles. Dye attempted to open the windshield to access the car’s door but observed that the woman inside was not breathing.
Witnesses described both drivers as Hispanic. Observers also reported that the SUV driver was slurring his speech. Authorities removed the man from his vehicle, and he was taken into custody.
At 8:35 P.M., scanner traffic from the department indicated they would assist with body recovery once the coroner arrived.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) handles the investigation. Highway 18 was expected to remain closed for several hours.
The reason for the SUV driver’s arrest has not yet been released. Deputies from the Apple Valley Station continue to investigate the incident.
