Fatal Helicopter Crash on Catalina Island
AVALON, CA (June 19, 2019) – At least one person died in Tuesday’s helicopter crash on Catalina Island near the Catalina Island Airport.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the missing Robinson R44 helicopter that took off from the Torrance Municipal Airport was later recovered — along with the pilot — around 10 a.m.
Witnesses also say they last saw the Robinson hovering around Silver Peak, just northwest of Two Harbors.
Crews began combing the area around 9:20 a.m., due to the missing helicopter that was reported 11 hours prior.
Per reports, the pilot’s family said the man would often fly the helicopter across the ocean. Authorities currently believe the man was the sole occupant of the aircraft.
Because information regarding the cause of the crash is unclear, investigators are still working to determine the events and details.
