9-Year-Old Girl Fatally Injured in Collision on Intersection of 35th and Paxton Avenues

OAKLAND, CA (April 10, 2018) – A 9-year-old girl was fatally injured in a hit-and-run crash on the intersection of 35th and Paxton Avenues, on Tuesday night.

The deceased young girl was identified by the Alameda County Coroner’s office as Zayda Monge. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, following the accident, but was pronounced dead the following day.

According to reports, the accident occurred around 9:03 PM. A Toyota Corolla containing four people, including Zayda, was near the intersection of 35th Avenue and Custer Street when it made a u-turn to go southbound on 25th. An Infinity SUV that was driving southbound struck the Toyota and fled.

A 25-year-old woman and two other girls, ages eight and ten, were also in the car and suffered injuries. They were transported to a local hospital, and were reported to be in stable condition on Wednesday.

The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to crash into multiple other parked cars in the area, according to Police Officer Johnna Watson.

There is no description of the hit-and-run driver, the vehicle involved, or the passengers inside of the vehicle. Police continue to search for them. Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $15,000 if your information leads to the arrest of the SUV driver.

Authorities continue to investigate the fatal accident, and believe that speed may have played a factor. It is unclear at this time whether or not drugs and alcohol were involved. If you witnessed the incident or have additional information to share, contact Officer Pete Huppert in the Traffic Investigation Section at (510) 777-8542, or crime stoppers at (510) 777-8570.

Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Zayda Monge. Wishing them strength and support in this very difficult time. May she rest in peace.
