Officer Injured in San Benito Pedestrian Accident on South Expressway 83
SAN BENITO, TX (January 1, 2024) – Early Sunday morning, Yasser Ismail Abu Awwad Martinez was arrested in a startling pedestrian crash on South Expressway 83.
The incident happened at 1:30 a.m. on South Expressway 83 near the Oscar Williams Road overpass.
21-year-old Awwad Martinez of Brownsville was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Meanwhile, a witness revealed that as an officer conducted traffic control, a vehicle hit him.
When the authorities arrived, they found an officer lying on the roadway. Then, responders took the injured officer to Valley Baptist Medical Center in stable condition but with several fractures and other injuries.
Moreover, the authorities haven’t disclosed the identity of the officer.
Also, Martinez was issued a $75,000 bond but was released upon making bail.
San Benito police are still trying to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
