1 Person Critical After Wrong-way Crash on Interstate 17 in San Antonio

San Antonio, TX (August 22, 2024) – Early Thursday morning, one person sustained critical injuries in a crash on Interstate 17.

Reportedly, a wrong-way driver collided with an 18-wheeler on Interstate 37 in South Bexar County, leading to the shutdown of highway lanes, San Antonio police reported. 

The collision occurred before 4:30 a.m. on I-37 South, near Braunig Lake.

For reasons yet unknown, the driver crashed into the big rig, causing the vehicle to overturn. 

Emergency services transported the driver to a nearby hospital in critical condition; however, they are now listed as stable. 

The 18-wheeler’s driver was unharmed, according to police.

Traffic is currently being redirected off the highway at Southton Road, with northbound lanes remaining unaffected. 

SAPD confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and it is still uncertain when the highway lanes will reopen.
