Merced County, CA (November 24, 2023) On Thursday morning, 22-year-old Modesto man and a 30-year-old female passenger was killed after a wrong-way collision on Highway 99.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving on the southbound lanes of State Route 99.

Reports say that the Modesto man was driving a Hyundai northbound on the southbound lanes of the freeway, where his vehicle collided with a southbound SUV. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to overturn and burst into flames.

Officials say that the Modesto man and the front passenger in the SUV, identified as a 30-year-old woman, perished due to the crash.

Meanwhile, other occupants on the SUV were transported to a trauma center. The patients suffered major and minor injuries but are all expected to be ok.

Authorities are investigating the fiery crash and have not released additional information at this time.
