Pedestrian in Wheelchair Fatally Struck by Van in Stockton
STOCKTON, CA (July 16, 2019) – A woman in a wheelchair died in a pedestrian accident on 5 Freeway late Saturday night.
Authorities said the fatal crash happened at around 11:30 p.m. near Matthews Road. The 52-year-old victim was in the center median and trying to cross to the right shoulder when she was hit by a van. She died at the scene.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the van was traveling at about 65 mph at the time of the collision. Officers did not suspect the driver to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
CHP Stockton is investigating the collision as a possible suicide. This is due to the absence of 911 calls to CHP dispatch reporting the female in the wheelchair prior to the incident.
Officers closed the southbound side of the freeway for about two and a half hours during the initial investigation.
