Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Amtrak Train near Pacific Highway in Little Italy
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 26, 2018) – A woman was killed late Thursday morning after she was struck by a train near Pacific Highway.
As per reports, the deadly collision took place shortly before noon in the area of West Hawthorn Street and Pacific Highway in Little Italy. Witnesses claimed that a woman walking near the tracks was struck by a southbound Amtrak train.
The victim, described as a woman in her 30s or 40s, was pinned under the train and had to be pulled out by responding firefighters. She was then rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest with unspecified injuries. Unfortunately, the woman died on the way to the hospital. Her identity and city of residence were not immediately released.
An initial investigation revealed that the operator noticed the woman and immediately activated emergency brakes. However, the train was unable to stop before striking the pedestrian. Investigators continue to work on determining the events that led to the collision.
No further details have been disclosed to the public at this time.
