One Dead, One Injured in West Covina Wrong-Way Crash on 10 Freeway
WEST COVINA, CA (December 27, 2018) – A 54-year-old woman died in a wrong way crash on the 10 Freeway in West Covina on Monday, December 24.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi, the accident was reported at around 2:56 a.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway at Citrus Avenue.
Polizzi said that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses stated that the woman driving in a 1997 Honda Civic was honking at other vehicles as she drove slowly the wrong way. Both the woman’s Honda and the 2016 Mazda SUV she crashed with rolled over in left lanes, according to CHP.
The 30-year-old man driving the SUV, who was a resident of San Diego, sustained moderate injuries from the collision.
It was not yet determined whether dense fog was a factor in the incident but witnesses described visibility difficulties, the CHP said.
A SigAlert was issued at about 3:17 a.m. that closed all eastbound lanes at Citrus Avenue for the investigation, according to Polizzi. One right lane was reopened at 5 a.m. and all lanes were reopened around 5:45 a.m.
