Woman Fatally Hurt after Indio Train Crash on Grapefruit Boulevard
INDIO, CA (September 9, 2019) – A woman died following a train crash on 48th Avenue in Indio on Friday, September 6.
Cal Fire initially reported the accident at 9:46 a.m. in the area of Grapefruit Boulevard and Mitchell Drive in Coachella.
Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and Indio Police Department responded at the area. They later figured out that the incident occurred at the railroad tracks just north of 48th Avenue and Indio Boulevard. It is within the Indio city limits, according to police spokesman Ben Guitron.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, died at the scene. Her age and race were not immediately determined, Guitron stated.
Through the primary investigation, it appears the woman would have been on the east side of the tracks as the freight train moved north, Guitron said.
Based on witness statements on and off the train, the woman might have intentionally stepped into the train’s path, said Guitron.
We hope the family and friends of the victim are surrounded by steadfast and comforting support during this difficult time.
