62-Year-Old Woman Dies Hours after Collision near West Olive Avenue
MERCED, CA (May 23, 2018) – A woman was hospitalized Wednesday evening and died hours later, following a pedestrian collision on College Avenue.
According to the Merced Police Department, the 62-year-old unidentified woman was crossing College Avenue in a wheelchair near West Olive Avenue. Around 9:15 PM, she was struck by a 2006 Nissan Maxima, driven by 34-year-old Benjamin Lopez.
The police arrived at the scene and found the woman unconscious, but breathing, on the ground. She was airlifted to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where she died several hours later. Lopez was reportedly unharmed in the collision.
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash. It was also noted that there were no crosswalks nearby where the woman was crossing. Lopez’s cooperation with the police is expected to help with the progress of the case, as well as the autopsy results that will arrive in a few days.
