Patient Struck and Killed by Car after Jumping Out of Ambulance near Interstate 580
PLEASANTON, CA (September 3, 2018) – A woman was killed Monday morning following a pedestrian accident on Interstate 680. The identity of the victim was not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin.
According officials with the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 7:30 AM near Interstate 580. A patient was being transported from Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton to the John George Psychiatric Hospital in San Leandro.
For unknown reasons, the woman got out of her restraints, overpowered a paramedic, and jumped out as the ambulance was coming to a stop on a ramp connecting the two highways. Two vehicles were able to avoid the patient, who appeared to be attempting to jump in front of traffic. Subsequently, she was struck by another car.
The woman sustained fatal injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle remained on site and cooperated with investigators.
Officials said that the woman was detained by police earlier after she was involved in an accident. She was seen driving recklessly in the area of 5300 Case Avenue before slamming into multiple vehicles and hitting a pedestrian. Police also stated that the woman tried to grab an officer’s gun and a Taser was used to subdue her.
No further details were available to the public, as an investigation is ongoing.
