1 Killed, 2 Injured in San Bernardino Rollover Crash on Highway 18
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (July 2, 2019) – A woman died following a rollover crash late Tuesday afternoon on Highway 18 in the San Bernardino Mountains.
The crash happened around 5:40 p.m. below Upper Waterman Canyon Road. Initial reports indicated a silver SUV carrying three people struck a guardrail and rolled over multiple times before crashing over the side of the highway. The car came to rest in heavy brush and trees on a steep cliff side.
Bystanders at the scene reported that the transmission and axles were torn off during the initial crash and were left on the roadway before the vehicle and its occupants went over the side.
An off duty firefighter confirmed that a female occupant died in the crash. Her identity has not yet been released pending family notification.
Two men suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital.
Crews on scene used chainsaws to gain access to the vehicle. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department office of the Coroner arrived to the scene just before sunset.
The Old Waterman Canyon Road closed in both directions, while the second upbound lane of Highway 18 blocked while emergency crews worked on the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
