Driver Dies after Crashing into Boulders on Alta Mesa Drive in Redding
REDDING, CA (January 2, 2020) – A woman was killed following a high-speed crash Thursday evening in Redding, police said.
The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. near Alta Mesa Drive and Rancho Road.
According to Redding police, a white 2012 Kia Optima was speeding south on Alta Mesa Drive. It did not stop at a stop sign and crashed into the boulders lining the edge of the roadway.
A witness told police that the car was smoking after the crash and airbags had deployed.
When officers arrived, the car was still smoking but not on fire. They pulled the unresponsive woman from the car and pronounced her dead on the scene. No one else was in the car.
Officials say the unidentified woman was not wearing her seatbelt during the crash.
Rancho Road was closed for several hours and reopened around 1:15 a.m. Friday morning.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
