Big Rig Loses Tire, Hits Car on 5 Freeway in San Clemente Killing the Driver Inside
SAN CLEMENTE, CA (November 22, 2019) – A woman was struck and killed by a detached big rig tire Friday morning in San Clemente.
The crash happened just before 9:00 a.m. on 5 Freeway at Avenida Magdalena. According to the CHP, a white container trucker lost a tire that bounced over the center divider of the freeway.
The tire then struck a red Tesla in the northbound lanes, killing the driver inside.
The Orange County Coroner’s office only identified the victim as a 38-year-old woman from Vista. Her name has not yet been released pending family notification.
Officials closed several freeway lanes for about two hours while they documented the incident.
The trucker reportedly stopped on the nearby Cristinitos off-ramp. Officials ordered a full inspection of the big rig.
No additional information was provided at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
