SALYER, CA (June 13, 2021) – Early Saturday morning, a woman died while Daryl Howard suffered injuries in a crash on Highway 299.
The crash happened just before 5:00 a.m. Initially, the authorities believed that the two vehicles they found crashed into each other. However, they determined that there were two different crashes.
The first incident involved a 2008 Subaru that had two occupants from Willow Creek.
As the Subaru drove west on Highway 299, it drifted off the wet road, Then, it crashed into a large oak tree.
The CHP confirmed that the passenger failed to wear a seat belt. The 69-year-old female passenger succumbed to her blunt force trauma.
Meanwhile, 62-year-old Willow Creek driver Daryl Howard suffered major injuries. Responders took him to Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka for treatment of a broken wrist.
At this time, the authorities haven’t clarified whether alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the crash.
The authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, the second collision involved a 2001 Toyota Camry that was found abandoned near the Subaru.
According to the authorities, the Camry also traveled west and also veered off the road, to the east of the 2008 Subaru. Then, the Camry struck several oak trees.
The authorities believed that the Camry crashed just after the Subaru hit the large oak tree. They added that the male driver “exited from the Toyota Camry, made contact with the driver of the Subaru, and then fled the scene.”
The authorities urged any witnesses to call Officer Compton at the CHP Trinity River Area Office at (530) 623-3832.
