Young Mother Dies after Chain-Reaction Crash near Alton Parkway, Irving Aguilar-Calixto Arrested

IRVINE, CA (August 23, 2018) – A woman was killed early Thursday morning and nine others were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle pileup on 5 Freeway. The identity of the deceased victim was not immediately released to the public. pending notification of next of kin.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 1:30 AM, near the Alton Parkway exit.

A Dodge Challenger was heading south on the freeway at a high rate of speed before it collided with a Toyota Prius. Moments later, a second crash occurred involving a Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by a 24-year-old Chula Vista woman. She stopped the vehicle and unlatched her seatbelt to check her 6-month-old son in the back seat. Subsequently, the Mitsubishi was struck by another vehicle.

Authorities announced that at least nine vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction crash. The driver of the Mitsubishi sustained fatal injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 6-month-old child, along with seven more victims, was transported to a nearby trauma center. Another person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. There is no update on the curent medical condition of either injured person.

The Dodge driver, identified as 22-year-old Nevada resident Irving Aguilar-Calixto, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. No other information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
