Ahwahnee Woman Dies in 2-Vehicle Crash on Highway 49
OAKHURST, CA (February 20, 2019) — An Ahwahnee woman was killed after being involved in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 49 at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
Officials said the victim was operating a Chevy Silverado southbound on Highway 49 when she hit an icy spot as she was rounding a corner near Vista Del Rio Drive. The truck slid sideways and drifted into the northbound lane where it collided with a northbound Dodge Ram pickup towing an empty flatbed trailer.
The Dodge, which was reported to be traveling at 50 to 55 miles per hour, struck the Chevy on the passenger side and pushed it onto the east shoulder of the road. The force of the collision caused the Dodge to overturn, leaving it partially blocking the northbound lane.
The driver of the Chevy was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the Dodge, a mother and son on vacation from Lemoore, were evaluated by EMS at the scene and apparently suffered no injuries.
Cal Fire, Madera County Fire, Madera County Sheriff, CHP, Sierra Ambulance and CalTrans responded to the scene. Caltrans put one-lane traffic control in place while the accident was investigated.
The identity of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin.
Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim.
