2 Hospitalized after Vehicle Crashes into Deputy’s Squad Car in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (February 27, 2019) – A female driver sustained minor injuries while a San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputy had to be extricated from a car after a two-vehicle collision in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday at around 10 a.m.

According to Police Sgt. John Villanti, a woman driving a black Dodge Charger was turning left from southbound Santa Rosa Street onto Highland Drive to get into the Cal Poly campus. She apparently turned in front of the deputy’s unmarked squad car, which was traveling northbound on Santa Rosa Street out of the city.

Villanti mentioned that it was a significant collision due to the speeds in the area, adding that many people go faster than the speed limit of 45 mph without realizing it. It’s currently unknown how fast the cars involved were traveling, but both vehicles had major damage.

The woman driving the Dodge suffered minor injuries while the deputy’s condition is unknown. The deputy was taken by ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.

Highland Drive was closed in the Cal Poly campus at California Boulevard according to the Cal Poly’s University Police Department’s twitter account. The roadway was reopened at about 11:30 a.m.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to call Officer Megan Donovan at (805) 594-8033.

Driving can be very dangerous and almost anything can happen if you are not prepared. It is important to always drive within the posted speed limit and abide by all traffic laws. Slow down if you see traffic stalling ahead to avoid hitting other vehicles.
