Head-On Collision on Highway 18 at Sheep Creek Road Kills 1 and Injures 4 Others
PHELAN, CA (January 22, 2019) – A man was killed following a head-on collision Tuesday evening in Phelan, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision happened around 7:39 p.m. on Highway 18 at Sheep Creek Road.
A 2018 Nissan Sentra crashed into a silver 2017 GMC pickup truck after trying to pass a tractor-trailer truck. A witness told officers that both drivers of the Nissan and GMC tried swerving onto the dirt to avoid hitting each other, but still collided.
Responding paramedics found a male passenger in the Nissan with fatal injuries. The victim was later identified as a 56-year-old Wimol Gonzalez.
Four other patients were found, one of them suffered major injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center. The other three injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals.
There were also two dogs in the GMC truck, a German Shepherd and a Yorkie. Unfortunately, the Yorkie sustained broken legs as a result of the crash.
CHP officials are still investigating this tragic incident.
