Afternoon Head-On Crash on Highway 101 in Weott Kills 1 and Injures Another
WEOTT, CA (January 17, 2019) – A man was killed following a head-on crash Thursday afternoon on southbound Highway 101 near the Weott off-ramp.
The fatal crash happened around 4:33 p.m. involving a black Toyota Tundra and a white Toyota Camry.
According to the CHP, the pickup truck drifted into the southbound lanes of Highway 101 and collided head-on with a Toyota Camry. CalFire responded to the scene and had to use the Jaws of Life to free the victims from their vehicles.
The male driver of the Camry was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family members.
The unidentified driver of the Tundra was also transported to the same hospital with moderate injuries.
The pickup truck came to rest on its side, missing a right front wheel, and trash strewn across both northbound and southbound lanes. The sedan also had major front-end damage, right side damage, and its roof was caved in. Both vehicles were towed away for evidence.
Traffic was being diverted off at Myers Flat onto the Avenue of the Giants.
An investigation is still ongoing to determine all the factors involved and liability.
