12-Year-Old Girl Dead after Watercraft Crash on De Anza Cove Mission Bay in San Diego

San Diego, CA (July 31, 2023) – Saturday afternoon, the 12-year-old girl who was paddle boarding died in a watercraft crash on De Anza Cove Mission Bay.

The crash happened just before 2 p.m. on July 29 in the De Anza Cove area along Mission Bay Drive.

The girl was brought to shore where police officers rendered aid and started CPR until paramedics arrived and took over.

The girl was unconscious and was taken to a hospital where she later died. 

The location where the collision occurred is “an “open speed” area where operators of watercraft within 100 feet of shore or another operator must reduce their speed to 5 mph or less.

The speed of the personal watercraft involved in the crash and other circumstances were under investigation.

Police said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The Police Department’s Harbor Unit, which handles watercraft collisions, continues to investigate.
