One Dead and Five Injured in Boating Accident near West Branch Bridge

 
OROVILLE, CA (May 13, 2018) – One person was fatally injured and five others were hospitalized after a boat crash on Lake Oroville, on Sunday evening. The deceased victim was identified on Monday by the Butte County Coroner’s Office, as 27-year-old Walter Gerken of Paradise.
 
As per a news release, the boating accident was reported just before 6:30 PM in the area of West Branch Bridge. State Park, BCSO, Butte Medics, Cal Fire, and Enloe Flight Care responded to the scene for search and rescue operations.
 
Rescue teams found a 2006 Supra water ski boat that had struck the shore on Lake Oroville. All six occupants were thrown from the boat. Five people were reportedly injured in the accident. One person was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital for treatment, while the other five declined medical assistance.
 
Gerken was found by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Drowning Accident Response Team, 40 feet underwater, and pronounced dead at the scene. Brandon Smith, 29, was arrested on suspicion on boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
