Teen Fatally Struck on G Street Train Overpass Off 23rd Street
MERCED, CA (May 2, 2019) – A teen who was fatally struck by a train Thursday afternoon in Merced has been identified.
He was identified Friday as 13-year-old Vicente Mancera. He was a student at Hoover Middle School, according to school district spokesperson Sara Sandrik.
Just before 4:00 p.m., officers responded to reports of a person struck by a train near G Street train overpass off 23rd Street, police said.
When officers arrived, they found the student near the railroad tracks who died from injuries consistent with having been struck by a train, according to police.
Police said the boy was believed to be walking on the tracks and wearing headphones before the train hit him within 1,500 feet of Hoover’s campus.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office used dental records to identify the boy on Friday.
A carnival that was scheduled for Friday evening at the school has been canceled as a result of the student’s death.
