Veronica Chavez and Erick Marroquin Dies in I-49 Fatal Crash [Jasper, MO]

Jasper, MO (November 16, 2024) On Wednesday afternoon, 27-year-old Veronica Chavez and 33-year-old Erick Marroquin were killed in the fatal crash on I-49.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the deadly crash happened at about 3 p.m. on Interstate 49.

Reports say that a driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the tragic crash.

Authorities say that the serious collision prompted a swift response from Jasper Fire, Jasper County Deputies, and Mercy Ambulance. Jasper Police, Barton County Deputies, and MoDOT

Emergency Response assisted with traffic control while the Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Investigation Unit conducted an inquiry.

Preliminary findings revealed that a 30-year-old man from Carthage was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla northbound when he fell asleep, causing the car to slow almost to a stop. A 2017 Ford F-250, driven by a 56-year-old man from Mount Vernon, struck the Corolla at highway speed.

Moreover, the force of the collision sent both vehicles across the median into the northbound lanes. The pickup came to rest on the rear quarter of the Corolla.

Officials say that 4 individuals were in the Corolla. Two, including the driver and a 33-year-old woman from Carthage, sustained moderate injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Tragically, two passengers— Chavez and Marroquin both of Carthage—were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jasper County Coroner James Harrison confirmed their identities and notified their families.

Following the investigation, S&S Wrecker cleared the vehicles and debris from the scene.
