Ricardo Vega Seriously Injured in Fatal Head-On Crash in Stratford
STRATFORD, CA (October 18, 2019) – A female correction officer was killed following a head-on crash Friday morning in Stratford.
The Kings County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Veronica Avalos, 41, of Hanford. She also worked at the state prison in Avenal since 2002.
Avalos was driving a Toyota Camry south on Avenal Cutoff Road near Gale Avenue around 6:25 a.m. After that, a 2013 Chevrolet Bolt traveled north from the opposite direction.
A vehicle in front of Avalos initiated a passing maneuver by traveling onto the northbound lane of Avenal Cuttoff. Avalos joined the other car and initiated her own passing maneuver.
During the passing maneuver, the vehicle in front of Avalos quickly merged back into the southbound lane and narrowly avoided a collision with an oncoming Bolt.
However, Avalos was unable to merge back in time before colliding head-on with the Bolt. The impact caused one of the vehicles to burst into flames.
As a result, Avalos suffered fatal injuries and later died at the scene.
The driver of the Bolt, identiifed as Ricardo Jesus Vega, was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with two broken legs.
Vega works at Pleasant Valley State Prison.
Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of Veronica Avalos.
