Fatal Pedestrian Crash on 80 Freeway in Vacaville
VACAVILLE, CA (February 13, 2019) – A man was killed after being struck by a big rig Wednesday morning in Vacaville, CHP officials said.
The fatal incident happened just before 7:00 a.m. on eastbound 80 Freeway at Davis Street during the heavy rains.
According to the California Highway Patrol, an International tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on the fourth lane of 80 Freeway when the driver spotted a male pedestrian walking in the lane ahead. The driver was unable to stop his vehicle and struck the victim.
The man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family members.
The big rig driver, a 54-year-old Martin Ponce of Daly City, stopped at the scene, according to CHP. He was unharmed.
CHP officials issued a severe traffic alert, shutting down one lane to document the incident, which caused traffic to back up during the morning commute. The lane was re-opened by 8:30 a.m.
It is unknown if charges has been filed and liability has not yet been determined. An investigation is still ongoing.
