Patrol Vehicle on 101 Freeway Fatally Struck Uber Passenger in Encino
ENCINO, CA (October 15, 2019) — A patrol vehicle on 101 Freeway fatally struck an Uber passenger Monday morning.
The authorities said the California Highway Patrol received a call about a distressed Uber trip in the westbound lanes near Balboa Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. The Uber driver stopped after some sort of altercation between two passengers in the car.
As the officers conducted a traffic break on the westbound 101 Freeway, one of the passengers ran across lanes. He then jumped over the center divider into the opposite eastbound lanes where he was struck by an oncoming CHP vehicle. The officer in the patrol vehicle was about to assist with the incident.
Authorities described the victim as a male adult in his 30s but they did not immediately release his name.
On the other hand, the CHP officer riding the patrol vehicle did not sustain any injuries. However, the windshield of the vehicle was heavily shattered.
The Uber driver, who wished to be identified as Randy, said the passengers didn’t appear intoxicated when he picked them up in West Hollywood. According to him, he had to stop the car when the passengers started punching each other as it was distracting. Randy added that he wasn’t aware that the passenger jumped out of the car.
