Uber Passenger Struck and Killed in Encino Crash on 101 Freeway
ENCINO, CA (October 15, 2019) – An Uber passenger was struck and killed after he jumped over a median on 101 Freeway on Monday, October 14.
Officers responded to a report of an Uber driver stopped in the freeway’s westbound No. 1 lane at around 3:40 a.m. In addition, the driver stopped near Balboa Boulevard after reporting that passengers were in a physical fight in the vehicle, the CHP stated. According to CHP Officer Weston Haver, they received the call from the Uber driver in distress.
One of the passengers got out of the black Honda Civic and jumped over the center median. After that, a CHP vehicle struck him while he ran across eastbound lanes. However, it appears that the CHP vehicle was responding to the area. In addition, other officers ran a traffic break at the same time.
The No. 1 lane is the fast lane, the closest to the median wall. It was not immediately known why the driver did not pull to the right shoulder of the freeway.
Officers only described the passenger, who died at the scene, as a man in his 30s. In addition, a second passenger and the driver stayed in the area.
Initial reports show that no CHP officers sustained injuries. However, the CHP cruiser’s windshield looked like it was shattered.
