Double Fatality after Suspected DUI Collision near Road 40
MADERA COUNTY, CA (September 20, 2018) – Two people were killed early Thursday evening and two others were critically injured in a head-on crash on Avenue 9. The identities of the victims were not immediately available, pending notification of family members.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 6:00 PM near Road 40. An Acura Legend sedan was heading east on Avenue 9 when it crossed over the center line and collided with a westbound Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV.
The impact of the collision critically injured a woman and a man inside the SUV, and they were later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Meanwhile, a 1-year-old child in the back of the SUV was rushed to the Valley’s Children Hospital with major injuries. The sole occupant of the Acura also sustained critical injuries from the crash and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Downtown Fresno for treatment. There is no update on their current medical conditions.
Investigators say that there was a strong odor of marijuana and an alcohol bottle in the Acura. It was also noted that the victims in the SUV were not secured in their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Additional information will be released following the conclusion of the investigation.
